UntitledFormer Longhurst Housing Group Strategy Director, Zoe Wortley has joined a leading social housing consultancy to head up its growing governance department.

EMA Business & Management Consultancy’s appointment follows a surge in demand for governance services over the last 12 months and will see Zoe strengthen and provide a strategic lead for this important service.

Zoe, who joins EMA as Director of Governance and Strategy brings a wealth of both sector and specialist experience, having worked within the housing industry for almost 20 years.

Previous roles include positions at the Housing Corporation and the National Housing Federation, where Zoe advised on governance and policy development alongside managing the Regional Committee and undertaking significant lobbying work to influence national housing policy. She also supported other regional boards such as the East Midlands Housing Task Group.

She joined Longhurst in 2004 and has spent the last 10 years overseeing and delivering governance policy across all Group organisations, leading on Board recruitment, induction, appraisal and mentoring programmes, Board pay, code of conduct, competency and effectiveness reviews, developing Board capability policies, succession planning and reviewing inspection and audit processes. Zoe comments: “I have lived and breathed housing for almost two decades, focusing on everything from influencing national policy for UK Housing Associations to developing and implementing governance policy for a single Group.”

“It became clear that governance was the discipline where my passion truly lay and when I found out about the opportunity to join EMA I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Anne and the team are fantastic. They are both highly professional and skilled operators, whilst being very open and warm with great energy – it really has felt like being welcomed into a family.”

“This role gives me the opportunity to help influence and grow an already thriving consultancy, whilst playing an integral part in delivering a vital discipline which is in high demand by Housing Associations across the country. It is a very exciting time for both EMA and the sector and I am very much looking forward to all that lies ahead.”

Zoe’s experience further strengthens existing governance expertise within EMA which includes the delivery of Board Appraisals, Board Effectiveness campaigns, Board Succession planning, search and selection for non-executives and Board pay reviews for Housing Associations across the UK.

EMA managing director Anne Elliott said: “On behalf of all of the team at EMA we would like to wish Zoe the warmest of welcomes. Her knowledge and experience within the sector, specifically within governance is second to none so we are really thrilled to have her on board.

“We are in the midst of a very turbulent time for Housing Associations, with pressure on Boards up and down the UK to demonstrate effective strategy, a dynamic approach and transparency in all they do. EMA are proud to offer independent support on a broad range of governance issues and welcome Zoe’s input in delivering effective governance solutions for our clients in the months and years to come.”
